|INSTALL A TALKTALK BROADBAND MODEM/ROUTER|
In this section I am going to show you how to install a modem/router from TalkTalk (UK) using the Installation CD that comes with your TalkTalk modem/router package. Although this section is specific to new TalkTalk users, it could be of use to people with similar packages. Therefore, you may learn something!
At this point DO NOT CONNECT ANY PART OF YOUR MODEM/ROUTER TO YOUR COMPUTER. This is very important. So begin with everything still in the box except the Installation CD. Insert the Installation CD into the computer's cd/dvd drive where you may then see the following AutoPlay requester appear - AutoPlay is explained in the AutoPlay Settings section. Basically. If the autoplay requester appears click on its RUN (Run ConnectGo.exe) link, otherwise you will need to double click on the cd/dvd drive's icon and then double click on the ConnectGo.exe file. Doing so will display the talktalk splash screen (Fig 1.1) which means the Connect & Go installation wizard is about to start.
When the Connect & Go installation wizard appears (above) just click on its NEXT button to continue. The only real requirement at this stage is that
you have your laptop on the mains power throughout the installation process, if you are using a laptop of course.
The next page to appear will be the License Agreement page. Read its Terms & Conditions, if need be, before clicking on the I ACCEPT radio (circle) button. If you do not agree with the Terms & Conditions, for whatever reason(s), simply exit/quit this installation process by clicking on the red X button on the top-right corner of the window. Otherwise, click on the NEXT button to continue.
Over the years Windows Firewall, and other Firewalls too, have been a constant menace to certain installation processes simply because they tend to over-protect your computer and therefore block certain installation processes from performing properly. And that is what the next few pages are all about - Making sure your firewall is not blocking anything to do with this installation process. So if you see anything along the next few stages of installation that ask you if you would like to BLOCK or UNBLOCK any aspect of this talktalk installation process, click on the UNBLOCK button.
In this example even though I have Norton Security installed, together with its firewall, I did not get any BLOCK or UNBLOCK message requesters appear.
This does not mean you will not as well though. It depends on your installed security software and whether or not it switches off Windows Firewall.
After the firewall detection you are then asked what you want to do next in the page that follows. As you are newly installing your talktalk modem/router just leave the default setting enabled - I AM NEW TALKTALK BROADBAND CUSTOMER ..... I WANT TO INSTALL MY NEW TALKTALK MODEM/ROUTER.
The next page to appear needs reading. It tells you what you need in order to continue. Basically. You need your Welcome Letter and Broadband Activation Letter to hand. And you need to make sure your wireless adaptor is switched off (disabled). In some cases you may not of received a welcome pack and/or activation letter at all, for whatever reason(s), and therefore may need to contact TalkTalk to see what is happening with your order and/or activation. When you have these required details to hand click on the NEXT button to continue. Otherwise, click on the EXIT button to stop the installation process.
After making sure you have your requirements and clicking on the NEXT button (Fig 1.8 above) the page after that (Fig 1.9 above) simply runs through what
is going to happen throughout the stages of broadband setup. Simply click on its NEXT button to continue.
The first stage of broadband setup is to select your modem/router from the following modem/router pictures page. In this example my modem/router is the first one (the Huawei HG520b Wireless Router) which I selected by clicking on its radio (circle) button. I did this out of habit! but normally your modem/router is automatically detected/selected for you via the preprogrammed installation cd. If it is not, simply click on the radio (circle) button next to your modem/router picture. When that is done click on the NEXT button to continue.
The next stage is too configure your modem/router, but first you must check that you have all of the supplied equipment in your box. Read the following page very carefully so that you know what each piece of equipment is and/or does. When you are satisfied that you have all of the equipment click on the NEXT button to continue.
In the following stages you are going to be shown what piece of equipment plugs into the computer, telephone socket(s), modem/router and so on. What goes
where basically. So it is vital you read the following window content very carefully to avoid, serious, mistakes/mishaps.
In this first step you need to plug the Microfilter's TELEPHONE CABLE into your wall mounted TELEPHONE SOCKET and then plug one end of the Grey ADSL (Broadband) CABLE into the Microfilter's MODEM SOCKET. The Grey ADSL Cable is the same at both ends, so it does not matter which end you plug in. After that you need to plug your TELEPHONE CABLE (the actual telephone's cable) into the Microfilter's PHONE SOCKET. So to clarify. The microfilter has two sockets on it - MODEM and PHONE. The grey adsl cable goes into the MODEM socket and your normal telephone's cable, that you normally plug into the wall mounted telephone socket, is plugged into the microfilter's PHONE socket instead. This is because the wall mounted telephone socket is now occupied by the microfilter's telephone cable. When you have made these connections click on the NEXT button to continue (Fig 1.12 below).
Now get the other end of the Grey ADSL (Broadband) CABLE and plug it into the ADSL SOCKET located at the back of the modem/router. Next. Get one end of the Yellow ETHERNET CABLE (both ends are the same) and plug it into the LAN1 SOCKET located at the back of the modem/router. With the other end of the Yellow ETHERNET CABLE plug it into your Computer's or Laptop's ETHERNET SOCKET. So one end is your modem/router LAN1 SOCKET and the other end is in your computer's or laptop's ETHERNET SOCKET. When you have made these connections click on the NEXT button to continue (Fig 1.13 below).
That just leaves the modem/router POWER SUPPLY UNIT (PSU). Plug it into a wall mounted Electric/Plug Socket and then plug its ADAPTER-LIKE CABLE into the POWER SOCKET located at the back of the modem/router. When the modem/router is securely connected up, with all the cables in the correct sockets, switch the modem/router on. There is a tiny Off/On Switch on one side of the modem/router. Simply press it in to switch on the modem/router. When you have done this click on the NEXT button to continue (Fig 1.14 below). The modem/router will then be checked through a series of tests. When the test is complete you should see the Success result (Fig 1.15). From there, click on its NEXT button to continue.
After the modem/router has been checked and successfully passed all the tests (above) the ASSIST & GO (Broadband/Diagnosis) Software is installed. When that has successfully installed click on the NEXT button to continue (Fig 1.16 below). Doing so will take you to the Email section of this installation process (Fig 1.17).
In Fig 1.17 above (the Email section) you are asked to create an Email Account so that talktalk can email you from time to time and so that you can check your phone bills online, create a website and much more. If you have already been to the talktalk website and created yourself an email account, like I did, you can ignore this email section by putting a tick next to the option I HAVE ALREADY CONFIGURED A TALKTALK EMAIL ACCOUNT. I highly recommend creating a talktalk email account before installing your modem/router. When you first sign up to TalkTalk they give you a Tracking Number whereby you can track what is going on with your order. Simply create a talktalk email account as soon as your order shows your Activation Date. It can save a lot of aggravation/frustration in the long term if something does go wrong with your order and/or modem/router installation.
In this example (Fig 1.17 above) I am not showing the email account setup process because I assuming you already have an email account (as just described) and even if you do not, it is an easy process. Simply enter a new User Name & Password into the relative edit boxes before clicking on the NEXT button. If you already have an email account put a tick next to the option I HAVE ALREADY CONFIGURED A TALKTALK EMAIL ACCOUNT before clicking on the NEXT button. Either way, the email section will finish with the following page. Click on its NEXT button to continue.
Once your email account has been setup/accepted the installation wizard then asks you if you would like to activate (enable) the Wireless capabilities of your modem/router. In this example select the YES - ENABLE WIRELESS NOW radio (circle) button. Even if you do not need/want wireless capabilities now I would strongly recommend you activate this wireless broadband feature now. You can activate it later but to keep things tidy activate now. After selecting YES - ENABLE WIRELESS NOW click on the NEXT button to continue.
The next two steps will set up the wireless part of the modem/router. Simply read the information on each window carefully before clicking on its NEXT button to continue. In the second step you may want to print out the wireless modem/router details.
The next lot of steps will guide you through the set up of your computer's (or laptop's) wireless adapter, so that it can connect to the modem/router wirelessly - from your computer (or laptop) to the modem/router without the need for the Yellow ETHERNET CABLE. If you do want to connect wirelessly now, even just for test purposes, DO NOT UNPLUG The Yellow Ethernet Cable yet. Just make sure the YES option is selected and then click on the NEXT button to continue (Fig 1.22). Doing so will make the installation process perform various, wireless, tests (Fig 1.23). Once your wireless adapter has been detected click on the NEXT button to continue (Fig 1.23).
With your computer's (or laptop's) wireless adapter detected; Now unplug the Yellow ETHERNET CABLE from your computer (or laptop), and from your modem/router, and then click on the NEXT button (below).
After unplugging the yellow ethernet cable and clicking on the NEXT button (Fig 1.24 above) the connection between your modem/router and your computer
(or laptop) are attempted, wirelessly. If all goes well you should see the Connection Success page (Fig 1.25 above) and your computer (or laptop) should
be connected to your modem/router wirelessly. Go on the internet to find out. When all is well, click on the NEXT button to continue (Fig 1.25 above).
Doing so will take you to the Security section of this installation process.
The security section consists of two pages that basically advertise talktalk's offer of F-Secure security software, which they recommend. When you restart your computer (or laptop) you will be offered a trial of F-Secure, via your web browser, and can decide whether or not to download F-Secure. If you do download load it, on a trial basis, and decide you want to keep it you can pay for it on a monthly payment plan. Read the next two pages, carefully, for more information. Click on the NEXT button of page one to continue and on the FINISH button of page two to complete this installation process.
With your new TalkTalk Broadband and Modem/Router installed, possibly wirelessly, restart your computer. If you did set up the wireless feature your computer (or laptop) should connect wirelessly to your modem/router talktalk broadband connection.
