HOW  TO  RENAME  A  FOLDER

If you look at a newly created folder you will notice its name (New folder) is highlighted in blue, surrounded by an Edit Box. This means it is waiting to be edited (Renamed). An edit box is a box that allows you to edit the text already inside it or type in some new text.

When you click, anywhere, inside the edit box for the first time the text becomes un-highlighted and a flashing cursor is positioned where you clicked (Fig 1.1 below). In Fig 1.1 I have clicked in between letters f and o. From here I can type in some new letters and/or delete old ones in order to rename the folder (Fig 1.2 and Fig 1.3). In this example I am renaming New folder to New friends. This did not have to be the case though. I could of renamed the folder John or whatever.

When you rename a folder you usually press the ENTER keyboard key to set the folder's new name. However, this also reselects the folder, and its new name, which means accidents can happen. For example: If you accidentally press the DEL (Delete) keyboard key, while the folder is selected, a requester will appear asking you if you want to delete the folder. To avoid this scenario just click anywhere inside the DOCUMENTS folder (window) display area, after renaming, to set the new name and to then deselect the folder.

If you want to delete the whole of the old name (New folder), before renaming, simply press the DEL keyboard key when the name is selected (Fig 1.7). More information about the Edit Box can be found in the Edit Box Explained section.

RENAME  AN  EXISTING  FOLDER

To rename an existing folder you must first have it selected, by clicking on either its folder name or its yellow folder icon.

Once the folder is selected you then have the choice of two menu methods. With menu method one; Place the mouse pointer over the selected folder and, whilst over the selected folder, click the right mouse button (right-click). Doing so will bring up the context menu (Options menu) for that selected folder. From there move the mouse pointer down (or up) the menu-items, temporarily highlighting each menu-item as you move downwards (or upwards), until you reach and highlight the menu-item called RENAME. Now click the left mouse button (left click), whilst the mouse pointer is over the word RENAME, to activate the RENAME Edit Box - Follow the above steps (Figures 1.2 to 1.4) to actually rename the selected folder.

Note: Technically you did not have to select the folder first, with this menu method, as a Right-Click acts as a Double Click. So in this case the Right-Click selects the folder and then displays the context (Options) menu.

RENAME  A  FOLDER  -  METHOD  TWO

Menu method two uses the currently selected folder's window, and more precisely its Ribbon, to activate the RENAME function. A Ribbon is a sort of drop-down window or menu with buttons on it instead of traditional menu-items; such as the menu-items on a context menu.

To rename a folder using the ribbon you first need to select the folder (Fig 2.0 above). Once selected click on the HOME Tab (menu-item) of that selected folder's window, to display the ribbon (buttons menu), and then left click on the RENAME button to activate the RENAME Edit Box (as in Fig 2.2 above). You can now rename the selected folder.

As you can see; The two menu methods have similar options for the selected folder, such as DELETE. And this is the case for most menus. So always check to see if there is a Right-Click, context menu, available for example for the task you are doing; such as deleting a folder or copying a file. Likewise, check if there is a ribbon (buttons menu) available for that task.
